A PhD project is available in the Schizophrenia Research Laboratory at Neuroscience Research Australia (NeuRA) in Sydney. The Schizophrenia Research Laboratory investigates molecular and cellular changes in the brain of people with schizophrenia and across normal human brain development. Our goal is to uncover underlying molecular mechanisms that may contribute to the development of schizophrenia, including inflammation, neurotransmitter systems, hormone receptors and growth factors.

The successful PhD candidate will investigate how inflammation blunts neurogenesis in the adult brain using various different experimental approaches, such as RNA sequencing, qPCR, western blot, histology, and microscopy.

The successful PhD candidate is expected to hold an undergraduate degree with first-class Honours in neuroscience, neurobiology, biomedical science or related disciplines. Experience in histological techniques with knowledge of neuroanatomy, understanding of microscopy and/or working knowledge of molecular biology is highly desirable.

In the advent that the student is not awarded a Research Training Program (RTP) scholarship, a stipend can be offered as a 3-year scholarship (with possible extension for 6 months if required) at the RTP rate (currently $28,092 p.a.).

To be eligible for this project, applicants must meet entry requirements for admission to the PhD program at UNSW. Applications will be judged on a competitive basis considering the applicant’s previous academic research experience, publication record, awards, interest in mental health research, and employment history.
