The Federation was founded in 1930 as Tanganyika Football Association (TFA). It was later renamed as Football Association of Tanzania (FAT) in 1971 after major amendments in its Constitution.
FAT existed until 2004 when the new name TFF came into force after the body’s General Assembly held on 27th December of the same year.

The Chief Executive Officer of the Tanzania Mainland Premier League (TPLB) Board, Almasi Kasongo has announced the official start date for the new Premier League season 2020/2021 and provided the full schedule of the league on 17 August 2020.
He said this at the Tanzania Football Federation (TFF) Headquarters in Karume, Karikoo-Dar es Salaam.
Elaborating on the league, Kasongo said that the first league games are expected to start on September 6, while making it clear that the league launch game, Nagao ya Jamii, is expected to be played in Arusha where it will once again bring together Simba SC and Namungo FC at the stadium. of Sheikh Amri Abedi, Arusha Tanzania.
In addition Kasongo officially approved the release of the schedule for the new 2020/2021 season and said that it will have a total of 18 teams as the executive committee has already approved.
Officer Kasongo clarified that the decline in the number of major league teams this season is one step towards remaining 16 teams in the future.
However, Kasongo explained that by the end of this season 4 teams will descend to complete the process of remaining with 16 teams.
He went on to say, parallel to that; in the participation of 18 teams is expected to have 306 games from 380 games adding that there will be 34 rounds for home and away games and that they expect to finish the league on May 15, 2021.
Kasongo noted that the play-offs are expected to be played just four days after the league ends on May 19, 2021 with a rematch on May 23, 2021.
He also added that the schedule was based on the FIFA and CAF calendars despite the fact that they had not officially received the FIFA and CAF Calendars showing the schedules of those calendars and thus claimed that they had only used experience and estimates as in their previous schedules, according to the relevant championships.
He added that if there were any changes to the calendar, then it should be expected that there would be a slight change in the schedule as well.
However, Kasongo also commended the entire leadership of ‘Azam Media’ for ensuring the league continues to be shown and providing an opportunity for stakeholders and fans to witness the commercials of their teams playing various games.
He also commented on their new plan to upgrade some stadiums to enable matches to be played even at night and said that would add fuel to the new league season.
The official of the Tanzania League Board, concluded by expressing his sincere gratitude to the government under the leadership of Dr. John Pombe Magufuli especially through the Ministry of Information, Culture, Arts and Sports; in partnership provides them with TFF and TPLB in general.
At the same time Kasongo praised all journalists and football fans in the country for showing great cooperation in the previous league season and called on all stakeholders to continue to be together in the new 2020/2021 season.
