Social Science and the Environment Writing Workshop

UDOM Call for Applications-Deadline extended to 30th June, 2020. Advancing Academic Writing for  Early Career academics in Tanzania Publishing research in internationally recognized academic journals can be hard and frustrating. Its difficulties can seem considerable. And it is absolutely fundamental to any  successful academic career. If you publish in good journals your work becomes known, your career blossoms, your networks grow and it is satisfying and rewarding. If you do not then all of those achievements and rewards are harder to obtain.

The purpose of this writing workshop is to make publishing in academic journals easier, and the process of writing more enjoyable. It will bring together senior researchers from Tanzania and overseas, editors of numerous international journals (virtually and physically) and early career academics. The latter will present their draft papers for peer review by fellow ECRs, senior colleagues and editors.

That process will provide feedback which will improve the chances of publication. It will also have additional benefits including networking opportunities, grant writing advice and learning to give as well as receive critical feedback.

In order to focus discussions and make it possible for particular topics to cohere across different papers this workshop is restricted to scholars writing papers for Social Science and Humanities journals, and on the broad topic of the environment and environmental change (broadly defined). We particularly welcome papers working on the social science of climate change.

Programme

The 3-day workshop will be held at the University of Dodoma and will use face-to-face meetings, seminars, presentations, Skype and Zoom video calls with senior international editors, peer to peer reviews and group discussions. Editors and academics from leading journals will facilitate the workshop to address issues including the publication landscape, publication strategies, dealing with reviewers’ comments, engaging social media, and responding to funding opportunities.

Funding

The University of Dodoma (UDOM), in collaboration with The University of Sheffield, The University of Dar es Salaam (UDSM) and the Nelson Mandela African Institution of Science and Technology (NMAIST) has received funding from the British Academy to support successful applicants to cover travel, accommodation and subsistence costs for the duration of the workshop.
